Two days later I was sitting in my office, sorting through the various lists Jordan had created with Kyleâs help, when Lille finally called me back. Iâd called her on Friday, after Iâd given my statement to the police, but sheâd never returned my call.
It was Sunday. John had gone to the hospital to help take Kaylee home, and Max was supposed to be resting at the house, but I had a feeling heâd gone to the pub. Jordan was waiting on customers, while Carl and Kyle had gone to get some lunch for the two of us. There hadnât been any new developments in the case. The attackers had worn masks and Kaylee didnât remember anything.
I explained what had happened to Lille, leaving out the part where Iâd slept with John.
âYouâre shitting me.â Lilleâs voice practically echoed through the phone line.
âNope.â
âSomeone attacked her?â
âExactly.â
âIn your store?â
âUh-huh.â
âOh my God, sweetie, are they okay?â
I sighed and leaned back in the chair in my office. It was midafternoon and I felt as if I were the one whoâd gotten beaten up and sent to the hospital. Iâd been working my butt off calling insurance companies, the annoying Detective Panetta, and various suppliers, trying to restock the items that had been destroyed.
Iâd also been working with Kyle and Jordan to get the place cleaned upâwhich was a hoot and a half when it wasnât exhausting. I hadnât seen much of John. Heâd gone back to the hospital on Friday night after weâd made our statements to make sure Kaylee was okay. Heâd met her mom there and made sure that all the bills were being paid. Carl had come by to check on me when he wasnât pestering Max to relax and take it easy.
John had taken care of the business at the pub last nightâSaturdays were always the busiest nightsâwhile Iâd stayed at the Box. No one had wanted me to stay here by myself, so Max had stayed in Johnâs apartment, and Detective Willis had periodically driven his patrol car through the parking lot. Iâd never been so tired in my life. Not even when I had stayed up all night painting for my final project in school.
âMary. Hello, Mary . . .â Lille singsonged. âTalk to me or Iâll think someone has beaten you over the head.â
I brought myself back to the conversation with Lille. âA mild concussion, a few bruised ribs, and a seriously ugly black eye. The doctor said Maxâd be all right after a few weeks of rest. Kayleeâs a little worse. She also has a broken arm, but sheâs going home from the hospital today.â
âDamn. Max is your business partner, right?â
âYeah.â
âSo whatâs he like? Cute?â
I rolled my eyes. If I didnât know that Lille often tried to hide her emotions behind humor, Iâd be a little annoyed right now. I could just picture her sprawled out in the overstuffed, purple armchair in her stockroom with one leg hooked over the edge and a book in her lap.
âNot cute,â I countered immediately.
