Two days later I was sitting in my office, sorting through the various lists Jordan had created with Kyle’s help, when Lille finally called me back. I’d called her on Friday, after I’d given my statement to the police, but she’d never returned my call.

It was Sunday. John had gone to the hospital to help take Kaylee home, and Max was supposed to be resting at the house, but I had a feeling he’d gone to the pub. Jordan was waiting on customers, while Carl and Kyle had gone to get some lunch for the two of us. There hadn’t been any new developments in the case. The attackers had worn masks and Kaylee didn’t remember anything.

I explained what had happened to Lille, leaving out the part where I’d slept with John.

“You’re shitting me.” Lille’s voice practically echoed through the phone line.

“Nope.”

“Someone attacked her?”

“Exactly.”

“In your store?”

“Uh-huh.”

“Oh my God, sweetie, are they okay?”

I sighed and leaned back in the chair in my office. It was midafternoon and I felt as if I were the one who’d gotten beaten up and sent to the hospital. I’d been working my butt off calling insurance companies, the annoying Detective Panetta, and various suppliers, trying to restock the items that had been destroyed.

I’d also been working with Kyle and Jordan to get the place cleaned up—which was a hoot and a half when it wasn’t exhausting. I hadn’t seen much of John. He’d gone back to the hospital on Friday night after we’d made our statements to make sure Kaylee was okay. He’d met her mom there and made sure that all the bills were being paid. Carl had come by to check on me when he wasn’t pestering Max to relax and take it easy.

John had taken care of the business at the pub last night—Saturdays were always the busiest nights—while I’d stayed at the Box. No one had wanted me to stay here by myself, so Max had stayed in John’s apartment, and Detective Willis had periodically driven his patrol car through the parking lot. I’d never been so tired in my life. Not even when I had stayed up all night painting for my final project in school.

“Mary. Hello, Mary . . .” Lille singsonged. “Talk to me or I’ll think someone has beaten you over the head.”

I brought myself back to the conversation with Lille. “A mild concussion, a few bruised ribs, and a seriously ugly black eye. The doctor said Max’d be all right after a few weeks of rest. Kaylee’s a little worse. She also has a broken arm, but she’s going home from the hospital today.”

“Damn. Max is your business partner, right?”

“Yeah.”

“So what’s he like? Cute?”

I rolled my eyes. If I didn’t know that Lille often tried to hide her emotions behind humor, I’d be a little annoyed right now. I could just picture her sprawled out in the overstuffed, purple armchair in her stockroom with one leg hooked over the edge and a book in her lap.

“Not cute,” I countered immediately.
